Gahnite is a very rare member of the spinel family, till this recent small find the majority of stones have been very small, included, and not such nice colors. When i first saw this nice blue material coming out of Nigeria i was intrigued and purchased some of this new find of blue spinel. When it arrived i put it under a chelsea filter which can be an indication of cobalt content so i was very excited at the possibility of cobalt spinel (my favorite gem!) and sent a faceted sample off to the GIA for a report. When it came back from the GIA indicating Gahnite needless to say I was very excited about this material.
This gahnite weighs 0.36 Carats and measures 3.75 x 3.75mm, is eye clean with a nice electric blue color. It would make a great addition to a gem collection or could be fashioned into a beautiful piece of jewelry!
