Gahnite is a very rare member of the spinel family, till this recent small find the majority of stones have been very small, included, and not such nice colors. When i first saw this nice blue material coming out of Nigeria i was intrigued and purchased some of this new find of blue spinel. When it arrived i put it under a chelsea filter which can be an indication of cobalt content so i was very excited at the possibility of cobalt spinel (my favorite gem!) and sent a faceted sample off to the GIA for a report. When it came back from the GIA indicating Gahnite needless to say I was very excited about this material.
This gahnite weighs 0.39 Carats and measures 3.45 x 3.45mm. The clarity is just short of eye clean with a small crystal inclusion visible with a very sharp eye. The color is a beautiful electric blue color. It would make a great addition to a gem collection or could be fashioned into a beautiful piece of jewelry! It matches the other gahnite listed if interested in a pair.
